Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lighting Thief

Plot: The Lightning Thief is about a kid named Percy who finds out he is the son of Poseidon. He must travel around the country with his friends to try to find Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt and get his mom back from Hades. Along the way they must battle monsters, travel to the underworld and face a traitor in their midst.
Review: I was a huge fan of these books, and I was excited to see the movie. As a movie it was O.K, but compared to the books it was horrible. The special effects were actually pretty good (about the same as the mist) but the acting wasn’t. Probably skip it if you haven’t read the books, but if you have it is still pretty cool to see the books come alive.

The Rocker

Plot: The Rocker chronicles the story of a drummer named Robert “Fish” Fishman. In the 80′s he was kicked out of his band Vesuvius that eventually went on to be rock legends. He never let that go. Now twenty years later he is asked to play for his nephew’s band at the prom due to their drummer getting suspended. The band blows up bigger than expected and they become national celebrities (Thanks to an embarrassing video of Fish). Eventually they land a tour, and now all that is in front of them is their career’s, the open road,…and trouble.
Plot: The Rocker is a fairly funny movie that had some memorable parts. Fish got a bit creepy at times and particularly scarring in that video mentioned, and that sometimes downplays some of the comedy. But for the most part it’s an enjoyable comedy.
Actors: Rainn Wilson (Fish), Christina Applegate (Kim), Emma Stone (Amelia), Jeff Garlin (Stan), Jane Lynch (Lisa), Jason Sudeikis (David Marshall), Will Arnett (Lex), Fred Armisen (Kerr), Bradley Cooper (Trash).

Gentleman Broncos

Plot: Gentleman Broncos is pointless, stupid movie about a homeschooled kid that gets his story stolen by a famous author….yeah, that’s about it.
Review: Seeing that the creators were the same creators and Director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre I though this movie was going to be very stupid, but very funny. Take out the very funny part and that about sums it up. There are absolutely no funny parts, and it’s all absolutely disgusting. Do not waste your time on this one!
Actors: Michael Angarano (Benjamin), Jemaine Clement (Chevalier), Jennifer Coolidge (Judith), Halley Feiffer (Tabatha).

Inception

Plot: Inception is about a group of “thieves” that go into people’s dreams and steals ideas or secrets. The leader Cobb has been framed for his wife’s death, and his new employer promises that if he does this one last job, all the charges will be dropped. It sounds like a pretty good deal except for one thing, he wants an inception. An inception is planting an idea instead of stealing, and it has only been done once before. Soon after they enter the dream, things get complicated and the team must work together to finish the job and get out alive.
Review: Inception is a very well done, but sometimes confusing, thriller. Almost everyone I know liked it, even the ones who claim they didn’t “get it”. It is confusing at first, but you will be so engrossed that you’ll notice the details that start to help you make sense of it all. it is now one of my favorite movies, and if you haven’t already seen it, than you probably should.

Despicable Me

Plot: Despicable me is about a cold-hearted supervillian named Gru who’s glory days are long gone. When the perfect time to pull off his greatest heist yet, a crucial piece is stolen by his rival sipervillan name vector. He adopts three girls to help him get it back, but soon he finds that he is growing attached to the girls. Soon, he is forced to decide between the heist and dedication to the girls.
Review: Dispicable me is a charming animated movie that generated a lot of hype. I though it was pretty good, but not as good as everyone said it was. There are a couple of funny parts, and a great (if not a little cliche) message. All-in-all a pretty good family film.

Fast and Furious

Plot: Fast and Furious starts off with the well-known character Dom leaving his crew to ensure their safety. Meanwhile, Brian O’Connor has been reinstated to the police force. Those two frenamies meet again when a loved one of Dom’s is killed running for a drug lord, and Brian is put in undercover to bring down the kingpin. With different goals in mind the two face each other (and occasionally help each other) to see who will get to the drug lord first.
Review: Fast and Furious is my favorite out of the three (I say three because tokyo drift has absolutley no connection to the characters and stories of all the others). It has less actual racing, but more action than all the others. Any fan of the series or exotic cars is sure to like, if no love, this movie. I’m really looking forward to Fast5 in 2011!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Plot: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is about a high school senior who fakes sick and skips school (for the ninth time this semester). Except, Ferris knows his skip days are limited before he gets in serious trouble, so he makes this one special. He goes to the windy city with his best friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane. Nothing could ruin this day, except the fact that the dean of students and nosey sister are out to prove that Ferris isn’t really sick at whatever cost.
Review: F.B.D.O is all-in-all a very enjoyable movie. It’s a typical 80′s comedy, there are some chuckle-worthy parts, but not really keel over laughing parts. Besides that, it is a very entertaining movie and it deserves it place among the classics.

Without a Paddle

Plot: Without a Paddle is an easily forgettable comedy about three lifelong friends with very different personalities, that after the fourth member of their childhood posse dies, go a trip to find a treasure that they dreamt about finding as a kids. Along the way they encounter angry mountain men, creepy treehuggers, and a crazy old man.
Plot: As I said before, Without a Paddle is an easily forgettable comedy with a few memorable parts, although it is one of the few comedies that have an uplifting message. There are better comedies out there, but if you’re in the mood for a shut-off-you-brain-for-awhile comedy, this is the movie for you.
Actors: Dax Shepard (Tom Marshall), Matthew Lillard (Jerry Conlaine), Seth Green (Dan Mott)

Iron Man 2

Plot: Iron Man 2 starts off where Iron Man left off. Now it’s 6 months later, and Tony Stark has succesfully organized total world peace. One downside is that the government now wants the suit, oh and Tony’s dying. The very machine that is saving his life is also poisoning his blood. To make matters worse, a Russian madman has created a makeshift suit and is bent on killing Tony. And Stark Industries rival is using that madman to make more suits. Now Tony must figure out how to make all these things right.
Review: Honestly, I think numbers one and two are about the same in quality. I really liked them both. This one is still action packed, and still has interesting plot twists. If you were a fan of the first, you’re gonna be a fan of the second.
